I am newly engaged. Is it too early to start planning my wedding cake?

If you’ve just got engaged (first of all—congratulations!), you might be wondering where to even begin with planning. Somewhere between choosing a venue, booking your photographer, and thinking about flowers, the question of your wedding cake will inevitably come up.

And one of the most common questions I get from newly engaged couples is this: Is it too early to start planning my wedding cake?

@madhatphotobooth

The short answer? No—not at all. But like most things in wedding planning, the timing depends on a few key factors.

Where Does the Cake Fit in the Planning Timeline?

When you first get engaged, the natural starting point is usually the venue. This sets the tone, date, and often the overall style of your wedding. From there, most couples move on to securing their photographer, followed by key suppliers like catering, florals, and styling.

The cake often comes slightly later in the process, as it tends to tie in with those final design details—your colour palette, florals, and overall aesthetic.

That said, while it may not be the very first thing you book, it’s certainly not something to leave until the last minute.

When Should You Book Your Wedding Cake?

In Ireland (and similarly across the UK), the general timeline I recommend is 6 to 9 months before your wedding. This allows enough time to design something thoughtful, schedule tastings, and ensure availability—especially if your wedding is during peak season.

However, I often have couples who book a year in advance, and I completely understand why. Popular dates—particularly spring and summer weekends—can book up quickly, and securing your cake designer early gives you peace of mind.

If you’re someone who likes to have key suppliers locked in early, booking your cake around the 9–12 month mark is a great option.

What If You’re Booking Early?

If you’re planning well in advance, one concern I sometimes hear is: What if I change my mind?

And the answer is—you probably will, and that’s completely fine.

@jakebuftonweddings

When couples book early with me, I always reassure them that design details can be adjusted up until around two months before the wedding. Your initial booking secures your date, and from there we can refine everything as your plans evolve.

You might not have chosen your flowers yet. Your colour palette might shift. You may even completely change your vision—and that’s all part of the process.

Booking early doesn’t lock you into a rigid design; it simply ensures that I’m available to create something beautiful for you when the time comes.

What If You’re Short on Time?

On the other end of the spectrum, I also work with couples who are planning on a much shorter timeline.

If your wedding is just a few months away—or even a few weeks—it is still absolutely worth enquiring.

I always say: there is no “too late” until you’ve asked.

Availability can vary depending on the date, design, and scale of the cake, but I do my best to accommodate where I can. Sometimes, a slightly simpler design or adjusted setup can make things possible even within a tighter timeframe.

So if you’re feeling behind—don’t panic. Just reach out, and we can see what’s achievable.

Why Timing Matters

While it’s true that a cake can be organised relatively quickly in some cases, giving yourself a bit more time allows for a more considered, bespoke experience.

With more time, we can:

  • Explore design ideas in depth

  • Arrange tastings and flavour pairings

  • Align your cake with your florist and overall styling

  • Create something that truly feels like you

Your wedding cake is not just dessert—it’s a focal point, a reflection of your day, and often one of the most photographed details.

The Design Process

For many couples, the cake becomes part of the wider design story once the key elements are in place.

Once your venue is booked and you have a sense of your styling direction, that’s usually the perfect moment to start thinking about your cake. Whether you’re drawn to soft florals, modern textures, or something more minimal, your cake should complement the rest of your day seamlessly.

This is why cake design often comes slightly later—it works best when it’s informed by your other choices.

My Advice to Newly Engaged Couples

If you’ve just got engaged and are wondering what to prioritise, here’s a simple guide:

Start with your venue, as this anchors everything else. Then secure your photographer, followed by key suppliers like catering and florals.

Once those elements begin to come together, that’s your cue to start thinking about your cake.

If your wedding is more than a year away, you can absolutely begin researching and even booking early if you have a specific designer in mind. If it’s within 6 to 9 months, now is the ideal time to secure your cake.

And if you’re closer than that? Don’t hesitate—just enquire.

Final Thoughts

@katydurnphoto

So, is it too early to start planning your wedding cake?

Not at all.

Whether you’re booking a year in advance or a few months before your wedding, the most important thing is finding someone whose work you love and who understands your vision.

From there, everything else can fall into place.

And if you’re not quite sure where to start, I’m always here to help guide you through the process—whether that’s refining your design, choosing flavours, or simply figuring out what’s possible within your timeline.

Because at the end of the day, your wedding cake should feel just as special as the rest of your day—no matter when you start planning it.
