Five Things I Wish Couples Knew About Their Wedding Cake (Before Booking)

Let me start with a slightly controversial take: most couples are overthinking their wedding cake… and still missing the point.

Your cake isn’t just a tradition to tick off your list. It’s a centrepiece, a talking point, and—when done properly—something your guests genuinely remember. At Bloom and Crumb, I see it all the time: couples who don’t realise just how much their cake can elevate their day until I guide them through the process.

So, here are five things I truly wish every couple knew before booking their wedding cake.

1. You don’t have to feed every guest with cake

Yes, really.

There’s a long-standing assumption that your cake must serve every single guest—but that simply isn’t the case. Many of my couples choose a smaller display cake for the cutting and photographs, with additional desserts or evening food covering the rest.

This approach often means less waste, a better use of your budget, and the freedom to focus on a cake that truly wows rather than one that just meets numbers.

2. Your flavours should be for your guests, not just you

Of course, your favourites matter—but your guests are the ones enjoying it.

I always recommend choosing a balance of flavours:

  • Something classic and familiar

  • Something fruity and fresh

  • Something decadent and indulgent

For example:

  • A vanilla & wildberry tier for something universally loved

  • A lemon olive flower or raspberry & white chocolate for a fruity option

  • A spiced carrot with chai, salted caramel, or chocolate for a richer finish

When you approach your flavours this way, there’s something for everyone—and your cake becomes part of the overall experience, not just an afterthought.

3. Your cake can represent both of your cultures

This is something I absolutely love creating—and something I wish more couples knew they could do.

If you come from different backgrounds, your cake can beautifully reflect both of your cultures. That might mean:

  • Infusing flavours from each heritage into different tiers

  • Creating a completely bespoke flavour that blends the two

  • Using flavour for one side and design or colour for the other

I offer bespoke flavour development (an additional £100), where I take the time to taste, test, and refine something entirely unique to you.

It’s not just a cake—it becomes a reflection of your story.

4. Timing your cake setup matters more than you think

This is one of the most overlooked details—and one of the most important.

The ideal time for setup is around 60 minutes before your ceremony. While you’re saying your vows, I’m ensuring your cake is perfectly assembled and styled.

This means your cake is:

  • Fresh

  • Structurally sound

  • Presented exactly as it should be

Your cake isn’t just dessert—it’s part of your décor. Getting the timing right ensures it looks flawless for the rest of your day.

5. Your cake can be served as a dessert or a dance floor treat

Cake doesn’t have to be limited to the traditional cutting moment—you’ve got options.

As a plated dessert:
Work with your caterers to elevate your cake into something more refined. For example:

  • Vanilla & wildberry with a mixed berry coulis, a dusting of icing sugar, and crème fraîche

  • Salted caramel with a warm caramel drizzle

  • Vanilla & passion fruit with a vibrant passion fruit coulis

As a dance floor snack:
Later in the evening, when the dance floor is in full swing and savoury options are being served, cake works beautifully as a sweet addition.

It’s relaxed, unexpected, and always well received.

So, what’s the takeaway?

Your wedding cake is so much more than a tradition. It’s part of your design, your guest experience, and your story.

And when it’s done thoughtfully, it becomes something truly memorable.
