A Floral Summer Wedding Cake at Chelsea Physic Garden, West London
There are some wedding venues that leave a lasting impression, and Chelsea Physic Garden is certainly one of them. As a wedding cake designer, I'm fortunate enough to visit some of the most beautiful venues across London and the South East, but this was my very first time creating a wedding cake for a couple getting married at this remarkable West London location.
From the moment I arrived, I could see why so many couples choose to celebrate their wedding here. Tucked away in the heart of Chelsea, Chelsea Physic Garden feels like a hidden oasis. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, rare plants and historic glasshouses, it offers a unique blend of elegance and natural beauty that is perfect for couples looking for a botanical wedding venue in West London.
In fact, I became so distracted by the incredible surroundings that I managed to get a little lost on my way out. After delivering the cake, I found myself wandering through the stunning greenhouses and admiring the garden's impressive collection of plants. It was easy to forget that I was still technically working!
For this wedding, the couple envisioned a romantic, flower-filled celebration that embraced the beauty of the venue itself. Summer weddings naturally lend themselves to abundant floral styling, and the talented team at Lavender Green Flowers created breathtaking arrangements that transformed the space.
When designing the wedding cake, it was important that it felt connected to the wider styling of the day. Rather than creating something overly ornate, the couple opted for a timeless and elegant design that would complement the flowers rather than compete with them. Sometimes simplicity is the most effective choice, particularly when the surrounding florals are already making such a beautiful statement.
One of my favourite elements of this cake was incorporating fresh clematis throughout the design. Clematis has such a delicate, romantic quality, and I love the way its trailing stems create movement across the tiers. Carefully wiring and positioning the flowers to ensure they cascaded naturally around the cake took time, but it was undoubtedly worth the effort. The finished result felt as though the flowers had gently grown around the cake itself.
Of course, while the design is important, flavour is just as memorable.
For the bottom tier, the couple selected one of my most popular flavours: Salted Caramel. This consists of a moist, delicate brown sugar sponge layered with silky salted caramel buttercream and generously topped with homemade salted caramel sauce. It's rich without being overpowering and always proves popular with wedding guests.
For the upper tier, they chose Vanilla and Wildberry, another favourite among couples planning a summer wedding. This flavour combines a light vanilla sponge with lashings of perfectly creamy raspberry buttercream and a vibrant wild berry preserve. The fruit adds a wonderful freshness that works beautifully during the warmer months and balances the sweetness of the cake perfectly.
To create additional height and presence, we included a faux top tier. This is a technique I often recommend when couples want a more dramatic cake design without needing extra portions. It creates an elegant silhouette and allows the cake to make a statement within the reception space.
As a wedding cake designer serving West London, I often work with couples who are looking for cakes that feel personal, refined and connected to their venue. Chelsea Physic Garden is a wonderful example of how the setting itself can inspire the cake design. The botanical surroundings, seasonal flowers and relaxed elegance all influenced the final result, creating a cake that felt completely at home within its environment.
For couples planning a wedding in West London, venues such as Chelsea Physic Garden offer the perfect combination of convenience, character and natural beauty. Whether you're hosting an intimate gathering or a larger celebration, the area's stunning venues provide endless inspiration for wedding styling, floristry and, of course, cake design.
Looking back at this wedding, it's the harmony between the venue, flowers and cake that stands out most. Every element worked together beautifully, creating a celebration that felt effortlessly elegant and deeply personal to the couple.
