Wedding cakes are delicate by nature. Ganache, flowers and decorative details can all be affected by temperature and environment. By delivering within this window, the cake isn’t sitting out for too long, which helps maintain both its appearance and structure.
For many couples planning wedding cakes in London or surrounding counties like Surrey and Buckinghamshire, this timeframe works perfectly with the typical flow of a wedding day.
When 45 Minutes Is the Better Option
Sometimes a slightly shorter window works even better.
If your cake is being displayed outside, in a marquee, or in a particularly warm month, I often recommend delivering the cake around 45 minutes before the wedding breakfast.
This is especially helpful because:
Heat can soften buttercream or fillings
Direct sunlight can affect decorations
Outdoor environments can attract curious insects or animals
By setting the cake up closer to the time guests will see it, I can ensure it still looks its absolute best when the moment arrives.
Outdoor weddings are beautiful, but they do require a little extra consideration when it comes to cake timing.
When the Cake Is Revealed Later in the Evening
Some couples prefer to reveal their wedding cake later in the evening, rather than displaying it during the wedding breakfast.
This might happen if your cake is placed:
In a different room at the venue
On a staircase or feature display area
In a reception space that opens later
In an area revealed when the evening party begins
In these cases, I usually recommend setting up the cake around an hour before the evening dancing starts.
This creates a lovely moment where guests notice the cake as they move from the meal into the evening celebrations. As the last courses are being finished, the cake can quietly be set up ready for its big reveal.
It also helps the cake remain fresh and perfectly presented for longer.
A Case Study: Setting Up a Wedding Cake at Ashridge House

What About Morning Cake Deliveries?
In most cases, I prefer not to deliver wedding cakes early in the morning.
Cakes that are delivered too early may:
Sit out for many hours
Be moved by venue staff
Lose some of their freshness or structure
I always prefer to set up the cake myself in its final display position, rather than leaving it in a fridge for the venue team to place later.
However, there is one exception.

Intimate Weddings
If you’re having a small or intimate wedding, morning delivery can work well — particularly if the venue has a cool room where the cake can be safely stored.
In these situations, I will always make sure the venue team knows to take the cake out around 40 minutes before it needs to be displayed so it can come to the right temperature and look perfect.

Don’t
Don’t have your cake delivered very early in the morning unless it’s an intimate wedding
Don’t place the cake in direct sunlight or near heat sources
Don’t move the cake once it has been fully set up
Don’t leave the cake outdoors for several hours in hot weather
Don’t forget to plan the cake-cutting timing within your schedule
